PROJECTS
The Flint Hills Resources Community Action Council purpose is to serve as a community think tank with an action arm. Action is generally taken through community projects - both short-term and long-term.

FHRCAC has developed their own defined project process. The council identified five major focus areas for the organization of smaller project teams to research, network and identify a particular gap or need as the inspiration of a council project. The team then begins work identifying goals, objectives and possible steps for implementation using the FHRCAC project planning template. The project is presented to the FHRCAC Steering Committee for review and approval, and when approved becomes the basis for a transition from Project Team to Project Task Force. Here they may invite participation and partnerships outside of the FHRCAC membership for effectiveness and sustainability. The five Project Teams are in various stages of this process at any given time - some in mature stages of project implementation, some in the beginning stages of identifying and clarifying a project idea.

Current Projects

Early Bird Reader Program (EBR)
EBR was developed to assist those children who are likely to begin school having had no exposure to books or reading. Statistics show these children are at a distinct disadvantage for succeeding in school compared to their peers who have been exposed to books and reading. EBR unique approach is to use a peer-to-peer model: children reading to the younger children at home not yet in school. This project has two important pieces: public book drives to collect books for 0-5 year olds, and implementation of in-school programs to equip, train and reward the school children who will read to their siblings.

The Gardens at Cole Park
The FHRCAC Environment Committee has partnered with Beautify Corpus Christi Association to create demonstration and educational gardens at Cole Park. The plan includes a three-phase design consisting of gardens, kiosks, plant identification, shade trees and gazebo area(s) that incorporate the best practices of Xeriscape and Earth Kind principles using drought-tolerant materials and addressing concerns of run-off and conservation. The committees primary interest is plant selection and community education, especially the use and value of native plants. They are working with another project partner, Michael Potter, of Texas AgriLife and Master Gardeners.

Coastal Bend Business Plan Competition
The Economic Development Committee developed an alliance of business organizations to create the CB Business Plan Competition for local entrepreneurs and students to jumpstart their technology-driven business ideas into reality - and for the community to support new innovative businesses that would bring additional economic development into the region. The Coastal Bend Business Plan Competition Committee is administrated through TAMUCC’s Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center (CBBIC). The competition is open to student and non-student entrepreneurs and existing businesses that have a new technology or technological product and want to develop their business idea in the Coastal Bend. The competition organizers include the area’s higher education partners that will promote and support this opportunity to their business and engineering students. More info...

Education Speakers Bureau
The Education Committee created a Speakers Bureau in the spring of 2010 as a resource for middle or high schools. It providse area students access to successful business people who can inspire students to build dreams and encourage them to reach their full potential. Speakers hope to serve as a role model by sharing their unique paths to success, lessons learned, information about their particular careers, and how education helped them succeed.
